Little Black Dress

Coco Channel popularized the little black dress. According to one account, the dress was created in the memory of her beloved Arthur Capel, since she couldn’t wear it herself, not being his official wife. There is also a second version, according to which Coco cried out: “I can’t go on like this! I’ll dress them all in black!” In 1926, the American magazine Vogue likened the universality of the “little black dress” to that of the Ford automobile.
